This evening I'd like to change the narrative and showcase the lovely things that are happening in the neighborhood. Yesterday's shooting of one of The City's Finest on Maryland Plaza and tonight's protest at the corner of Euclid and Maryland are dragging me down.
Here's an example of one of the many things we have to celebrate about the CWE: Young families who choose to raise their families in the city, and there are lots of them.
Cindy Teasdale McGowan and Cecilia Speroni, residents of Pershing Place, sent photos of a simple neighborly idea to celebrate summer in the city, or anywhere for that matter. Cecilia and her family moved to the CWE a year ago, and she said, "We absolutely love it!" She and neighbor Carol Ponceroli put the Scoop Stoops idea together, asked for funds from the Pershing Place Association for ice cream and cones, and sent an invitation to the residents.
The first group of photos shows the June event, and
The second group shows July 11th's Scoop Stoops. Cecilia said they will definitely continue the events next summer and hopes other blocks will follow suit and hold Scoop Stoops of their own.
I hope I have hijacked the bad news with this post and turned your evening into something sweeter. Thanks so much Cecilia, Carol and Cindy for bringing this to my attention and letting me share it with readers of this blog. I needed this.
The Stoops Scoops is a lovely idea. Thank you for sharing it with us. And you’re timing couldn’t be better! I am proud of the way our neighborhood has dealt with the shooting of our Officer and the subsequent actions of the protestors. We have kept the tone and activity level positive.
Something we can do to stand against this senseless violence is to normalize our neighborhood as much as possible. Continue to walk our lovely streets each evening and greet visitors to our neighborhood with warm hellos. Continue to frequent our local restaurants and retailers so that they can survive this troublesome time. And let the police officers who protect our neighborhood know how much we appreciate their service.
Thanks, Nicki, for all you do to remind the CWE family of our collective blessings. I so much appreciate all your research, writing, photography and enthusiasm for OUR COMMUNITY. Yes, it has been a difficult two days, but as I walked Euclid tonight I am convinced we will stay together and be undeterred in preserving who we are and what we have together. Love this place!
