On a simply gorgeous Friday evening, April 11, the CWE North Community Improvement District sponsored "Sip 'n Stroll" to celebrate spring (at last!) and give the four art galleries on McPherson some extra attention on a night when they all had openings. The Landolfi Quartet, above, entertained passersby, hors d'oeuvres were provided by Derek and Lucas Gamlin from their trio of neighborhood restaurants: Gamlin Whiskey House, SubZero, & Taha’a Twisted Tiki in The Grove, and of course, there was wine too.
Philip Slein Gallery featured work by artists Jamie Adams and Lori Ellison.
Gallery partners Jim Schmidt, left, and Philip Slein, right, are shown with artist Jamie Adams, middle.
A painting of actress Jean Seberg, above, is exhibited at Philip Slein as part of Adams' "Niagara Series." Read and see more about the exhibition here (caution: adult content).
Another Jamie Adams painting in the Niagara Series, above.
Lori Ellison's work is also on view at Philip Slein Gallery. The artist is a "miniaturist whose art is built on doodles, carefully cultivated, meditatively repeated — always freehand." Bridget Melloy, gallery manager, is shown in the photo above right in flower-print jacket.
Philip Slein Gallery, 4735 McPherson, current exhibition on view until May 17.
Mark Newport's knitted super hero costumes hang from the ceiling in the front room at Duane Reed Gallery. Newport's whimsical work would be a fun way to introduce older children to the gallery at 4729 McPherson.
It takes the artist Mark Newport, above, approximately two months to knit each costume, which he does "in the round" (if you're a knitter you'll know what this means). Both his mother and grandmother were knitters. Newport also embroiders covers of DC comic books, above and below, which intially got him into a little hot water with the comic book company. I gather from our conversation that art trumps commerce, and he will continue to create his art as he pleases.
Beverly Mayeri, left, is a ceramic sculptor who lives in the Bay Area. The artist's work has been shown in museums and galleries and is included in many public and private collections. Among the pieces on view at Duane Reed Gallery are "Mosaic Memory," above, and "Free Fall," below.
The current exhibition will remain at Duane Reed Gallery, 4729 McPherson, until May 17.
Both Charlie Houska Gallery, 4728 McPherson, above, and The Vino Gallery, 4701 McPherson, had exhibitions and were part of the very successful Sip 'n Stroll event. Unfortunately, I do not have photographs of the art in either space. Plan to stop by when you can.
