I have no idea how many years the building that once housed a former Schnucks store at the corner of Delmar and Kingshighway has sat empty. But there is welcome news as the building was recently torn down and a construction crew is working to clear the rubble. A sign on the corner announces that Aldi's plans to build one of its discount grocery stores on the site. This is the second Aldi's location near the CWE, another is located on Page just east of Kingshighway at Aubert.
It's welcome news that the corner, which has long been an eyesore, will fill a need for many and be productive once again.
We love Aldi’s for everything! The employees (at both Maplewood and the Page stores) are super-friendly and the available products are great. $1.79 for a big box of generic Cheerios, 89 cent canned tomatoes for chili, $3.99 for a big bag of almonds…that kind of thing. I also love that they’ve begun stocking some “conscientious consumer” products like unsweetened applesauce and natural peanut butter. The stores are also easy to navigate. I don’t feel like I’m devoting a whole afternoon to groceries when I go to Aldi (versus Schnucks). They have seasonal things too like the little 4-pack Russel Stover Valentine packages that my kids gave to their teachers. I, for one, am VERY HAPPY that a new Aldi will be close by.
