At the suggestion of a neighbor who has heard there are many people looking for a way to help residents of Ferguson, here is information on scholarships awarded by the St. Louis Community College Foundation to residents of 63135 and 63136 to attend St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley. Though the first scholarships were awarded in November, it is still possible to make a donation so that others will have this opportunity in the near future. Read on:

The first recipients of the Ferguson Scholarship at St. Louis Community College Challenge Grant were recognized during a special ceremony November 19, 2014 at the college’s Florissant Valley campus.
The recipients included Monique Pennermon, who is pursuing a career in physical therapy; Miyel Putman McCoy and Derrick Furlow, who both are studying nursing; Faith Jordan, who recently was recognized as a Florissant Valley Emerging Scholar and hopes to become a teacher; and Jessica Williams, an art education major.
McCoy was unable to attend the event.
To do something to affect positive change in Ferguson, anonymous donors decided to help boost educational opportunities for students in an area marked by unrest. These donors, along with the St. Louis Community College Foundation, jointly have created the Ferguson Scholarship at St. Louis Community College Challenge Grant specifically to assist students who reside in the 63135 and 63136 ZIP codes.
A total of 120 students submitted applications for the scholarship.
To ensure that this same opportunity is available for future students, the STLCC Foundation continues to accept donations to the Ferguson Scholarship at St. Louis Community College Challenge Grant. Contributions will be matched, dollar for dollar up to $25,000, and will provide scholarships, books and supplies for students from the Ferguson area pursuing a college degree at STLCC.
“We thank the donors for setting up this wonderful opportunity for our students,” said Ruby Curry, interim president of STLCC-Florissant Valley. “We would also like to thank those who have already donated. Our students are very appreciative and we look forward to changing more lives in the future.”
