A cicada (of the annual Dog-Day variety), top of photo, made a huge ruckus when I inadvertently watered it as well as the plant it was hiding in the other morning. I was as startled as the bug. A neighbor, who just moved here from LA, inquired about what the very loud whining noise is that she hears in the trees each evening. It's such a familiar sound of summer for a Missouri native like me, that I never considered that cicadas aren't found everywhere. Apparently they don't inhabit southern California.
