The photographs above and below are from the archives of photographer Martin Schweig (see previous archive posts here and here). These were taken by Martin's father and grandfather at The Municipal Theater (The Muny) in Forest Park in the 1920's. There is a fascinating history of The Muny on the website, including the fact that The Municipal Theater was built in 1917 in 49 days!
The final production of The Muny's 2012 Summer Season, The King and I, opens Monday, August 6, and closes Sunday, August 12. Several friends have raved about this season's productions, especially Thoroughly Modern Millie and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Thanks Martin for sharing these wonderful photographs. I have so enjoyed giving them some exposure.
And from our own archives, a watercolor of The Muny, artist and date unknown.
