After what seemed like way too many chilly and grey days, the skies cleared and we traded winter coats for short sleeves just in time for last Sunday’s “Ring in Spring” event on Maryland Plaza. The afternoon included a reunion of three generations of the Koplar family, above, who gathered for the dedication of a plaque placed on the Maryland Plaza fountain in memory of the late Ted Koplar. Bob Koplar (4th from left) welcomed the crowd and explained how passionate his father Ted was about Maryland Plaza.
The fountain is a major feature of the renovation of the plaza that took place nearly 20 years ago. Ted loved a big splash and was attracted to a fountain at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, so he hired the design team, Wet Design, to create a water feature for Maryland Plaza. (More about the fountain here.)Over the years, the fountain has become a gathering place for the CWE community, as well as the site of many events and photo ops.
The Easter Bunny was a popular draw. (More on the bouquet bar below.)
Students from Maryland Plaza’s Paul Mitchell The School worked their magic applying temporary tattoos and face paint.
The Cup donated dozens of cookies for decorating which were a big hit.
Music was provided by Dave Grelle’s Playadors with vocalist Joanna Serenko (not photographed).
CWEnder Kate Walter, former president of the CWEA (barely visible between the flowers) manned the bouquet bar. The gorgeous flowers were provided by Melody Human’s Magnolias.
Thanks to those who made the afternoon so special, including Maryland Plaza’s Frances Thompson, Nathan Ambus, Alana and Malia Thompson, Lucy Upmeyer, Maggie Ryan, and to Edera for the popcorn and lemonade.
Next CWE events: Back in Bloom this Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m., and CWE Families & Friends Easter Egg Hunt at Kennedy Park, Sunday, April 10, at 4 p.m.
