Barrel through a stop sign on Euclid or Taylor Avenues—no problem. Treat Kingshighway as your own private speedway—go for it. But exceed the newly-posted speed limit of 25 mph on Lindell Boulevard west of Kingshighway, and around 8 a.m. on weekdays traffic cops will be all over you. Over the past month I have heard several neighbors complain that they have found out the hard way that the speed limit was changed recently from 35 mph without apparent notice.
According to Scott Millikan, Court Administrator of the Municipal Division of the Circuit Court, if one were to plead guilty of traveling 40 mph (15 mph over the new limit, 5 mph over the previous 35 mph limit), be prepared to pony up $80 plus $48.50 in court costs!
As a practical matter, it’s difficult to exceed the posted 25 mph limit east of Kingshighway for many reasons: parking on both sides of the street, construction barricades around Euclid, traffic congestion near St. Louis University, etc. Curious about what the posted speed limit is as you continue east of Grand Blvd. on Lindell (Olive Street), which is one of the main thoroughfares leading to downtown, I drove as far as 20th Street and didn’t see a speed limit sign anywhere…. seriously.
