Other Ways, Other Times, Influences of African-American Tradition from St. Louis Collections, opens tomorrow night (Friday) at Philip Slein Gallery. The exhibition has been in the works for quite a while, but came together with more urgency after the recent events in Ferguson. Put together in partnership with St. Louis collectors and Susan Barrett of Barrett Barrera, Other Ways, Other Times highlights the influences of the African American tradition.
When I visited gallery owner Philip Slein yesterday, he said, “I have never been more proud of a show over the gallery’s twenty year history.” While the gallery is a for-profit entity, Philip is foregoing proceeds (since everything is on loan) to bring this “gift” to the community. In doing so, Philip hopes to encourage the collecting of African American art.
A diverse group of local collectors is loaning pieces to the exhibition. Kehinde Wiley’s After Titian’s (Tiziano Vecellio) Penitent Mary Magdalene, above, oil wash on paper, 90″ x 60″, is on loan from the collection of Susan and David Sherman.
Others who have loaned pieces to Other Ways, Other Times include CWEnders Dr. Donald Suggs, Adrienne Davis, Vice Provost, Washington University, Alison and John Ferring, and Jimmy Jamieson.
Ellen Gallagher’s “Deluxe”, 2004-05, 60 etchings, 13 x 10, is from the collection of Alison and John Ferring.
A drawing by Jean-Michel Basquiat above, is from the collection of Jimmy Jamieson. Here is a link to more Basquiat on artsy.
Other Ways, Other Times will remain on view until November 22.
Philip Slein Gallery, 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, 4735 McPherson.
Duane Reed Gallery, 4729 McPherson, is featuring paintings by St. Louis artist Andrew Brandmeyer, adjunct professor at Maryville University, Fontbonne University, and University of Missouri-St. Louis, and glass sculpture by Jiyong Lee, who teaches at SIU Carbondale.
Brandmeyer’s bio explains that his landscapes embrace the history of St. Louis while conveying the condition of a once-grand city in decline (which I hope is not the way the artist truly sees St. Louis these days). Notice downtown’s Plaza Square Apartments in the middle of Stares, oil on canvas, above.
Brandmeyer’s painting 1927-2014, 2014, oil on canvas, 48″ x 60″ depicting recent construction activity at the BJC campus is also included in the exhibition which opens Friday.
Jiyong Lee is associate professor and head of the glass program at SIU Carbondale. His work has been exhibited and collected nationally and internationally, including in the collection of the Corning Museum of Glass. Lee’s stunning Segmentation Series, above and below, is inspired by his fascination with cell division.
Andrew Brandmeyer and Jiyong Lee’s works will remain on view until November 29.
Duane Reed Gallery, 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, 4729 McPherson.
