Artists who have exhibited in the CWE, Jackie Saccoccio at Philip Slein Gallery, or are currently exhibiting, Claudia DeMonte and Annette Morriss (Intimate at Atrium Gallery closes today), have garnered recent notice in the New York Times.
Claudia DeMonte's brass and wood "Female Fetish: Open-toe Shoe" is currently on view at Atrium Gallery, 4814 Washington Ave.
Shown above is DeMonte's entry in the Fabergé Big Egg Hunt in New York City. According to a recent press release from Atrium Gallery, "a number of large eggs were created by 250 artists and hidden throughout Manhattan. DeMonte's golden "lucky egg" incorporates good-luck symbols from around the world. She had the good luck to be one of three winners of the event and her egg is currently on display in Rockefeller Center."
Annette Morriss who attended MICDS, Vassar College and earned her MFA from Yale University is one of the artists featured in Intimate, above, at Atrium Gallery. Morriss is also exhibiting her work at NOHO Gallery and M55 Art in New York.
One of artist Jackie Saccoccio's paintings as shown at the Philip Slein Gallery in May 2012 is shown above. As I recall, all of her work was snapped up by St. Louis collectors during that exhibition. Yesterday, New York Times art critic Martha Schwendener gave Saccoccio a glowing review for her work currently on view at Eleven Rivington.
You may remember that the neighborhood was recognized as one of the Top 33 ArtPlaces in the country in 2013 (see post here). Someday perhaps, St. Louis will be recognized by the national press as more than a stopping off point for artists of note.
