Eric Schlling, above, and Matt McRedmond, not pictured, proprietors of Mike's Bikes at 324 N. Euclid celebrated their first anniversary about ten days ago. (See last August's post here which tells the entertaining story behind the shop's name.) When I stopped by on the birthday, Eric was brimming over with excitement about their business that he said has exceeded every expectation and then some. Never in their wildest dreams, Eric said, did he and Matt think Mike's Bikes would achieve the success it has in a year's time.
Bike rentals to out-of-towners are strong, but it's new bike sales, repairs, and the sale of bike accessories that make up the bulk of the pair's business. You'll know you've spotted one of their custom bikes when you see a "Mike's Bikes decal" on the fender.
Because business is booming, they needed more room, so Eric and Matt recently signed a lease for the space directly behind the shop formerly occupied by The City's Finest bike patrols. They've cut an opening through to the new space that they are currently using for bike storage. Come winter however, these young entrepreneurs plan to renovate the addition to house more accessories. The combined area will also offer opportunities to hold biking events. Current plans are to add more display space outside by adding vertical bike racks to the alley wall, covered by an awning.
Happy Anniversary Eric and Matt! We're so glad you decided to open your business in the neighborhood.

P.S. – Biking enthusiasts will be interested to know that there's a group of approximately
40-50 bikers—men and women—who race on Thursday nights at the Penrose Park Velodrome, the only one in Missouri, located on the east side of Kingshighway just south of Hwy. 70. Warm-ups start at 5; sanctioned races begin at 6 and continue until dark, weather
permitting. Anyone can join in–or simply watch.
