A holiday gift guide for procrastinators Part II

Not surprisingly, Todd Lannom and Ginny Stewart, co-owners of Centro, 4727 McPherson Ave., have taken the minimalist approach to making gift shopping easy. There are simply three plywood tables at the front of the shop filled with beautifully designed, unusual gifts. Two tables hold items made in America, the third, selections from Italy.

Almost everything on the American table, above, was designed by artisans located in Brooklyn. Front: AreaWear by Bower designs clever geometric trivets that come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The larger herringbone shapes, front, are $35 each. The smaller tiles far left (made of wood) and right, can be mixed and matched and used as individual coasters too, $18.

Nicki's Central West End Guide Books, Dance, Music, Theater Events, Sightings Straub's Schlafly Library Normandy High School's marching band Mike's Bikes Make Music Day CWE Left Bank Books Evangeline's Citizen Park

There will be live music in the neighborhood all day today—the first day of summer—as the CWE joins in the celebration of Make Music Day, an international event. Ten neighborhood venues will be hosting musical acts including Evangeline’s, above, where earlier today staff from the CWE’s Jackson Pianos placed one of their pianos. Other businesses hosting live events include Left Bank Books, Straub’s, Mike’s Bikes, Citizen Park, and Schlafly Library (see entire list here).

To build awareness for Make Music Day students from Normandy High School’s marching band brought music to the streets Sunday afternoon June 3, see below.

Normandy High School recently won 1st place for best marching band in the Annie Malone parade.

Today’s festivities include a youth drum circle at 6 p.m. led by the School of Rock on Maryland Plaza. (The first 25 children to arrive will receive free drumsticks.) At 6:30 p.m. brass instrument players are invited to meet at the corner of Euclid and Washington to join a second line procession that will march through the neighborhood.

The first Fête de la Musique was held in 1982 in France. In 2016 The Central West End was among the first St. Louis neighborhood to participate in the global celebration. Today more than 700 cities around the world host their own Make Music Day.

For more information on today’s events visit CWE Scene. Many thanks to the North CWE Business Community Improvement District and the organization’s executive director Kate Haher for bringing this joyous event to the neighborhood.
