Over the years the earliest photo I’ve posted of the annual CWE 4th of July Children’s Parade is one that photographer Barbara Martin took in 1981, see below. In those early years the parade was organized by a few Lenox, Hortense, and Pershing Place parents who invited friends and neighbors to join in. Firemen from the neighborhood’s Engine House 28 led the parade around the block, and we were back where we started in about 20 minutes flat.
Eventually, the Central West End Association sponsored the parade and the event grew to include many more families, as the neighborhood itself has grown and expanded.
This year, the 36th annual 4th of July Children’s Parade is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday. Everyone is encouraged to decorate strollers, bikes, and yourselves, and meet at the corner of Euclid and McPherson Avenues. The parade will proceed down Euclid to the Maryland Plaza fountain where there will be holiday treats and entertainment for all. Spectators are most welcome.
Mounted police and a fire truck from Engine House 28 are scheduled to escort parade-goers. CWEnder Tim O’Connor will be there once again playing parade music from his vintage red Mustang.
At the fountain there will be jugglers, face painters, balloon art, and ice cream, compliments of neighborhood favorite jeni’s.
Check the Central West End Association website Tuesday morning for information in case of inclement weather.
Have a wonderful July 4th weekend everyone.
